I look back at the fact that my Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education is complete and how I have grown and transformed personally and professionally. This portfolio also not only shows off my achievements and skills, but my passion for creating a loving, inclusive, empowering environment for young children (Sims, 2015).
Through my studies and fieldwork, I have learned so much about children’s various needs and the necessity of fighting for their rights (Dockett, 2019). I have experienced placement, in particular with 3-5-year-olds, that has helped me realize the Reggio Emilia method and the importance of child-driven and inquiry-based learning (Waniganayake et al., 2012). I’ve come to see how to prioritize children’s agency, by providing open-ended play opportunities for curiosity and exploration, which has enriched my appreciation of the teacher’s capacity to facilitate learning (Haraway, 2006).
Being involved with social justice topics in early childhood education has helped me become more conscious of the power relations affecting children’s lives (Rossiter, 2011). With this sort of textual critical thinking, as well as the inclusion of diverse perspectives within my practice, I am better able to identify and work against stereotypes and biases to foster a space for people of all ages and cultures that encourages diversity and equity (Livingstone, 2018).
My Learnings and Expressing My Professional Philosophy: With this portfolio I have been able to assemble my learnings and express my professional philosophy. My goal is to provide an environment where children can discover who they are, and how to grow emotionally and academically (Uusiautti & Määttä, 2013). I understand the need for ongoing professional development and practice in learning how to be better at teaching (Grarock & Morrissey, 2013).
Going forward, I look forward to putting my knowledge and expertise into practice as an early childhood teacher. ‘I believe in children’s rights, in inclusion, and in creating an ethic-based leadership culture within education’ (Nolan, 2017). Though the future will be difficult, I am sure I am ready and equipped with the education and life experience to face it with strength and ingenuity.
In closing, this portfolio is not only a collection of my accomplishments but also a reference point for my future career in early childhood education. I am committed to making a difference in the lives of children and families and hope to help build a world where every child is loved, listened to, and allowed to become their best selves.
